Gu’s Team Wins Two Debate Tournaments

Gonzaga University’s debate team won the Weber Round Robin and the University of Utah Tournament last month.

Will Brewer and Ian McLoughlin, both seniors, won the two tournaments as part of a six-tournament, 25-day tour. Freshman Addy Hunsinger and sophomore John Voight finished 17th at the tournament.

Also representing Gonzaga were freshmen Brad Headridge, Sarah Westergren and Josh Yake; sophomore Kristin Olson; junior Sean Purdy; and senior Jeff Browder.

Eric Strate and Emily Stuenkel, both of Spokane, qualified for the Laureate Society at Whitworth College.

Army Sgt. Christopher Rainville, son of Donald Rainville, Nine Mile Falls, and Arleen Snider, Spokane, has been awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for outstanding non-combat meritorious achievement.

Rainville, A 1989 graduate of Deer Park High School, is a heavy wheel vehicle mechanic/shop supervisor at Schofield Barracks, Oahu.

Russell Reser has earned his Eagle Scout Award. Reser, a senior at Cheney High School, is in Troop 322.

Barbara Olson, an eighth-grade teacher at Cheney Middle School, was selected as Eastern Washington University’s Teacher of the month for January.

Olson was nominated her students Sheena Thompson and Shon Volk.

Air Force Maj. Merele Brumgard Jr., son of Ruthanna Brumgard, Medical Lake, has been awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for outstanding non-combat meritorious achievement.

Brumgard is a combat crew training flight instructor pilot at Altus Air Force Base, Okla.
