B.J. ‘Cy’ McLean Spokane

Vigil service for retired Grant County Superior Court Judge B.J. “Cy” McLean, 81, is planned for 4 p.m. Sunday at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the church with burial at Holy Cross Cemetery. Ball & Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. McLean, who died Wednesday, was born in Hoquiam, Wash., and graduated from Gonzaga Law School. He was admitted to the bar in 1941.

He practiced law in Spokane before he entered the Navy in 1942. He left the Navy as a lieutenant in 1946 and later that year he moved to Moses Lake and started a law practice. He was Moses Lake’s first resident city attorney and served from 1946 until 1953. He also served as a state representative in 1951 and 1952.

He was appointed to the Superior Court in 1957 by Gov. Albert Rosellini and served until 1979.

In 1982 he moved to Spokane and served as a judge pro tem when needed. He served on the Bench-Bar-Press Committee of the state of Washington for 18 years and on the State Clemency Pardons Board for nine years.

Mr. McLean was a member of the American Bar Association, the National Council of Juvenile Judges, and the American Trial Lawyers Association. He was also a charter member of Elks Lodge 1930 and Moose Lodge 1724 in Moses Lake, a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5926 and past commander of the Moses Lake American Legion.

Survivors include his wife of 24 years, Evelyn McLean; two sons, Cyrus McLean of Spokane and Kevin McLean of Seattle; two daughters, Shannon Glass of Moses Lake and Lynne Birmingham of Seattle; two stepdaughters, Maureen Juhola of Salem, Ore., and Marcia Smiley of Stanwood, Wash.; and 10 grandchildren.

Doris Appleton Spokane

Service for Doris Frances (Kruesel) Appleton, 78, will be at 1:30 p.m. today at Holy Cross Cemetery Chapel. Burial will follow. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Appleton, who was born in Spokane, died Wednesday.

She graduated from Central Valley High School and attended Holy Names College for a year, and in 1941 she married Albert Appleton.

They lived in Los Angeles during World War II and returned to Spokane in 1946.

She worked as a bookkeeper for Appleton Bros. Paint.

Her husband died in 1991.

Mrs. Appleton is survived by two sons, Albert Appleton of New York and Christopher Appleton of Scottsdale, Ariz.; two daughters, Margaret Allison of Seattle and Melissa Ward of Spokane; two sisters, Anita Wood of Orangeburg, S.C., and Barbara Miller of Chicago; a brother, Paul Kruesel of Seattle; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Ellen Murphy Spokane

Memorial service for Ellen M. Murphy, 71, will be at 10 a.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home.

Mrs. Murphy died Wednesday.

She was born in Independence, Kan.

She was a 35-year Spokane resident and was a homemaker.

Survivors include a son, Garry Murphy of Spokane; five daughters, Glenda Johnson, Lindi Larson and Sandee Evarts, all of Spokane, Eileen Elliott of Georgia and Kathleen Brantley of Newman Lake; 22 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.

Bobby Lovitt Spokane

Service for Bobby R. Lovitt, 58, is planned for 1 p.m. today at Hazen & Jaeger Funeral Home. Burial will be at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mr. Lovitt, a 40-year Spokane resident, died Wednesday.

He was born in Emlyn, Ky.

He worked for the Department of Corrections at Pine Lodge Pre-Release for the past 12 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 33 years, Betty Ann Lovitt.

He is survived by a daughter, Brenda Lovitt of Spokane; his fiancee, Carolyn Taylor of Indianapolis; his mother, Rosalie Lovitt of Emlyn, Ky.; two sisters, Wilma Angel and JewellDean Teague, both of Kentucky; and three grandchildren.

Wanda Nixon Chewelah, Wash.

Service for Wanda Joy Nixon, 72, is set for 11 a.m. today at Schanzenbach Funeral Home in Chewelah. Burial will be at Chewelah Memorial Park.

Mrs. Nixon, who died Wednesday, was born in Utica, Kan., and moved to Chewelah in 1952.

She and her husband, Art, farmed in the Cottonwood area east of Chewelah until 1980. Her husband died in 1980, and in 1984 Mrs. Nixon moved to Spokane, where she lived at Alderwood Manor.

She was a member of the United Church of Christ choir, the Women’s Fellowship of the church and the Valley Grange.

Survivors include two sons, William Nixon of Odessa, Wash., and Ronald Nixon of Sandpoint; two daughters, Judy Tennat of Escanaba, Mich., and Lorena Guyll of East Wenatchee; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Pauline Nickles Spokane

Memorial service for Pauline M. Nickles, 81, will be at 2:30 p.m. today at the O’Malley Apartments Chapel. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of the arrangements and cremation.

Mrs. Nickles, who died Thursday, was born in Halstead, Kan.

In 1966 she and her husband, Gene Nickles, moved from Kansas to Pateros, Wash. She worked as a sorter for Pateros Apple Growers Association until she was 72.

She moved to Spokane in 1987.

She was preceded in death by her husband.

Mrs. Nickles is survived by two daughters, Evelyn Feske and Lois Mundel, both of Spokane; a son, Joe Nickles of Modesto, Calif.; two sisters, Agnes McLean of Springfield, Mo., and Edith Moulds of Rapid City, S.D.; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Marvin Trochie-Brown Spokane

Memorial service for Marvin M. Trochie-Brown, 67, will be at 3 p.m. today at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2218. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Havre, Mont., Mr. Trochie-Brown died Wednesday.

He had lived in Spokane for 50 years and was self-employed in the scrapmetal business. He retired in 1979.

A nine-year veteran of the Marine Corps, he served in Korea. He was a member of VFW Post No. 2218.

Mr. Trochie-Brown is survived by a son, Michael Brown of Bremerton; two sisters, Rita Bonnett of Mead and Carol Wayne of Spokane; four grandchildren; and his longtime companion, Sandy Long of Spokane.

Ada Kelly Spokane

Memorial service for Ada (Rieckers) Kelly, 80, will be held at later date. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Kelly, who was born in Hamilton, Mont., died Thursday.

She had lived in Spokane for 59 years and had worked as a buyer for The Crescent department store.

She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Mrs. Kelly is survived by two sons, Terry and Thomas Kelly, both of Spokane; two brothers, Albert Goodwin of Spokane and Dean Goodwin of Puyallup, Wash.; two sisters, Beverly Yaryan of Green Bluff and Lila Walling-Freeman of Murray, Idaho; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Maurice Herling Spokane

Memorial service for Maurice “Marty” Herling, 73, will be at 1 p.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home. Private entombment will precede at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mr. Herling, who died Wednesday, was born in Baltimore.

He was a Navy pilot during World War II.

He and his wife, Lee, moved to Anaheim, Calif., in 1954. He worked for Delco-Remy Batteries for 23 years and retired in 1976. He moved to Spokane in 1980.

Mr. Herling was a member of the Wandermere Golf Course and the Men’s Club and was involved with the Washington State Junior Golf Association.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years; a daughter, Carol Fusco of Laguna Niguel, Calif.; a son, Edward Herling of Spokane; two brothers, Charles Herling of Boonsboro, Md., and Arthur Herling of Delan, Fla.; three sisters, Vera Brooks of Orlando, Fla., Louisa Brandt of Phelan, Calif., and Betty Herling of Baltimore; and two grandchildren.

Christopher Tatham Spokane

Memorial service for Christopher W. Tatham, 43, will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South.

Born in Pullman, Mr. Tatham died Wednesday.

He had lived in Spokane for 35 years and had worked in sales and taught travel-agent related courses at Trend College.

He is survived by his mother, Wardine Tatham; a sister, Trudy Tatham, and three brothers, Steven, Mark and John Tatham, all of Spokane.

Francis Ferger Spokane

No service will be held for Francis M. Ferger. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Ferger, 88, died Tuesday.

He was born in Post Falls and graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in Spokane.

He attended Kinman Business College for two years and worked at Kaiser Aluminum in Trentwood for 20 years.

He was also a farmer and worked in Otis Orchards for Otis Warehouse and Packing.

Mr. Ferger is survived by a brother, Claude Ferger of Veradale; and a sister, Josephine Bohn of Otis Orchards.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Morning Star Boys Ranch.

Rodney ‘Harvey’ Anderson Tekoa, Wash.

Memorial gathering for Rodney Lee “Harvey” Anderson, 53, will be held at a later date. Kramer Funeral Home in Tekoa is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Anderson, who died Wednesday, was born in San Pablo, Calif.

He graduated from high school in Redwood City, Calif., and then entered the Army and served during the Korean War. He was discharged from the service in 1963.

In 1977 he married Glory Dodge in Reno, Nev. They settled in the San Francisco Bay area, and Mr. Anderson worked as a warehouseman.

In 1984 they moved to Spokane, and he worked at the Mica Brick Plant. They moved to Tekoa in 1990, and he worked part time at the Tekoa Care Center.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Rodney “Buddy” Anderson of Tekoa; two daughters, Jamey Anderson of Spokane and Kelli Anderson of Tekoa; and his mother, Marie Montgomery and a sister, Judy Humrich, both of Redwood City.

Carl Abitz Spokane

Graveside service for Carl M. Abitz, 77, is set for 11 a.m. Thursday at Spokane Memorial Gardens. Memorial service will follow at 1 p.m. at Plymouth Congregational Church. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Spokane, Mr. Abitz died Tuesday.

He served in the Army during World War II and had worked as a commercial painter. He retired from Bonneville Power Administration.

Mr. Abitz was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 45 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1474 and was a deacon at Plymouth Congregational Church.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Annette Abitz; two sons, James and John Abitz, both of Spokane; a daughter, Mary Blanchard of Spokane; a brother, Ernest Abitz of Spokane; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Russell Carlson Spokane

Memorial service for Russell N. Carlson, 75, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Audubon United Methodist Church. The Cremation Society Of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Carlson died Wednesday.

He was born in Kenmare, N.D.

He lived in Omak for 25 years and moved to Spokane in 1978.

He worked for J.C. Penney for more than 40 years and retired as a manager in 1976.

Mr. Carlson served in the Navy during World War II and was a member of the Downriver Men’s Golf Club, the Omak Chamber of Commerce and Audubon United Methodist Church in Spokane.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Renee Carlson; two daughters, Joy McCarthy and Cheryle Cerenzia, both of Spokane; a son, Rod Carlson of Goldendale, Wash.; two brothers, Bud and Ray Carlson, both of Kenmare, N.D.; a sister, Twila Enget of Powers Lake, N.D.; and seven grandchildren.

Eloise ‘Mac’ Freeborg Port Townsend, Wash.

Family service for Eloise “Mac” Mac Freeborg was held.

Mrs. Freeborg, a former Spokane resident, died Jan. 22. She was 83.

She was born in Winona, Wash., and moved to Spokane when she was young and graduated from Hillyard High School.

She graduated from St. Luke’s School of Nursing and worked as a nurse on Kodiak Island in Alaska.

In 1939 Mrs. Freeborg returned to the Spokane area and settled in Green Bluff. She was a homemaker and also worked as a surgical nurse at Deaconess Hospital for 12 years.

She moved to Port Townsend 12 years ago.

Her husband, Jerry, died in 1976.

Survivors include two daughters, Margaret Hillman of Port Townsend and Kathy Patjens of Tacoma; three sisters, Irma Kuesterman and Jean Danielson, both of Spokane, and Belva Melsten of Portland; and three grandchildren.

Catherine Jungbluth Spokane

Service for Catherine M. Jungbluth, 88, was Friday at Sunset Mausoleum Chapel at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mrs. Jungbluth, who died Jan. 30, was born in Spokane and had worked at Sacred Heart Hospital in surgical supply.

She was a member of Garland Avenue Alliance Church.

Her husband, Joe Jungbluth, preceded her in death.

Survivors include two grandchildren, Vicki McCabe and Terry Lanz; 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
