Round 3 Goes To Lc T-Wolves Top Bengals; Post Falls Ousts Cda
Lewiston High’s Sara McEachern had a shiner near her eye. Teammate Laura Bloom took an elbow to her nose that watered her eyes and left her momentarily dazed.
In Round 3 of the Lewiston-Lake City girls’ basketball rivalry, there were no knockouts.
But Lake City got the next-best thing. The Timberwolves won on points, 52-43, in the A-1 Region I Tournament on Friday night before a crowd of 900 at LC’s gym.
“Lewiston is just tough,” said LC coach Dave Stockwell, whose 19-3 club has won 2 of 3 against the Bengals. “They could have rolled over in that second half (when LC went up by 13), but they fought back.”
“It was a war,” Lewiston coach Pat Zink said, “and that’s the way the first two games were, too.”
Expect more of the same during a fourth encounter (and perhaps even a fifth) early next week. First, though, the Bengals (18-2) face Post Falls (13-9) in a loser-out game tonight in Lewiston.
Post Falls ended Coeur d’Alene’s season with a 54-37 victory. The Vikings finished 7-16.

The Timberwolves led throughout and seemed poised to claim an easy win when Katie Hawn’s layup made it 35-22 midway through the third quarter.
But Lewiston closed within eight by the end of the quarter and trailed just 41-39 with 5:10 remaining.
LC’s Laura Dodge, who led all scorers with 14, drained a 3-pointer and Alison Asher added a layup off a pretty alley-oop feed from Katie Hatrock to hike the T-Wolves’ lead back to 46-41.
As important, LC switched from a man defense to a zone and the Bengals managed only a last-second field goal well after the issue was decided.
“Great coach that I am, I stayed in the man (defense) too long,” Stockwell said. “I’m really proud of our girls because we kept our composure. It started to slip away a little - we had a couple of bad passes - but we got it done when we needed to.”
Hatrock had 13 points, five assists and five steals. Hawn scored nine points and pestered Lewiston ball-handlers. Asher, after missing much of the first half with foul trouble, blocked three shots in the second half.
The Bengals were stung by LC’s pressure defense and committed 21 turnovers. Bloom had 11 points and four assists and McEachern chipped in eight points.
“We didn’t handle the ball well and we didn’t defend too well,” Zink said. “They had way more easy baskets than us.”
The familiarity of the teams leaves few secrets.
“If we play them Tuesday, it will be just as tough,” Stockwell said. “We call out a play and their kids are moving before our kids are. That’s OK. I feel we need to do what we do well.”

The Trojans made 30 free throws, including 18 in the fourth quarter.
Post Falls’ Megan Billetz hit nine foul shots and scored 17 points. Jennifer Swanstrom made her last 11 free throws.
“The one point of consistency we’ve had this year is converting at the line,” Trojans’ coach Chris Johnson said.
The win came at a cost as guard Lyndsy Klaudt injured an elbow. Coupled with Katelynn Brown’s injury a few weeks ago, the Trojans are thin in the back court, but Swanstrom provided quality minutes.
The Trojans’ Janelle Ruen supplemented an off shooting night with eight rebounds, eight assists and seven steals.
