In the first match, MalaVai Washington, ranked 24th in the world, took 3 hours, 10 minutes to defeat Gustavo Kuerten 3-6, 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-3), 6-3. Jim Courier then needed 3:50 to defeat Fernando Meligeni 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
