Man Dead, One Missing In Caribbean Crash

Compiled From Wire Services

A commuter plane carrying five people from St. Croix to St. Thomas crashed into the Caribbean Sea, killing at least one passenger, the U.S. Coast Guard said Sunday.

The Coast Guard rescued three men after their twin-engine Cessna plane nose-dived near Sabo Island, about three miles southwest of St. Thomas island, on Saturday evening, said Petty Officer Matthew Thompson. A fourth man was spotted floating face down and was presumed dead, while a fifth was still missing, he said.

Rescue workers scoured the area by helicopter and boat, but by nightfall Sunday there was no sign of the missing man and the crews called off the search for the day, said Petty Officer Joseph Ostdiek.

No information was released on the identities of the five men.
