Second Forum Set On Library, Garden

From Staff And Wire Reports

Citizens will have another opportunity to express their views on a proposed library and botanical garden in McEuen Field on Feb. 25.

The Coeur d’Alene Parks and Recreation Commission will hold another forum in the Bonner Room of the North Idaho College Student Union Building. The forum begins at 6:30 p.m.

The purpose of the forum is to “solicit input,” Parks Director Doug Eastwood said. The board would like to avoid testimony that repeats what already has been expressed.

However, anyone who hasn’t had a chance to speak is welcome to share their views, he said.

Late last month the Coeur d’Alene Library Foundation unveiled a $6 million proposal for a new library and botanical gardens. Businessman Duane Hagadone offered $2 million toward the project, in honor of his parents, if it could be located at what is now McEuen Field. Hagadone also has said he will establish a trust fund to pay for garden maintenance.

The first public hearing on the proposal was held Feb. 11. Some 300 people attended. Most of those who spoke strongly oppose the project.

The Coeur d’Alene Public Library Board met Thursday to try and decide what to do in the face of such opposition. The board decided not to do anything.
