Dollar Closes Mostly Higher

The dollar closed mostly higher Wednesday, deriving strength from a German central bank report that cast more uncertainty over Europe’s single currency plan.

Traders said benign inflation data in the United States and the death of Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping also helped buoy the dollar, overcoming the negative effects of news about a wider U.S. trade deficit last year.

The Bundesbank’s monthly economic report suggested that Germany may not qualify to participate in the euro currency program to debut in two years.
