Nordic skiing

Backcountry avalanche conditions are moderate below 5,000 feet. Compare aspects and watch for slides on steep terrain. Updates: (208) 765-7323.

At Mt. Spokane State Park, rain followed 9 inches of new snow Wednesday night, making grooming a touch-and-go proposition. Updates: (509) 238-4025.

Slushy snow and inconsistent weather have also made grooming difficult at Geo and Wolff trailheads near Newport.

Snowmobiling

As spring approaches, rangers in the Old Mission State Park say conditions change almost daily. Look out for small slough slides in warm weather. Roughly half the 420 miles of trails near Steamboat, Bumblebee and Shoshone Camp were groomed last week.

A Special Olympics benefit fun ride begins Sunday at 8 a.m. at the Marble Creek Station on the St. Joe River Road. A chili feed follows at the historical Roundtop Mountain lookout cabin. Info: St. Joe Snowriders, (208) 245-5189.
