Albright Says Yeltsin Appears In Control

Compiled From Wire Services

Secretary of State Madeleine Albright Friday described Russian President Boris N. Yeltsin as “sharp” and “completely in control” during an hourlong Kremlin meeting that aired but did not assuage Russia’s resolute objections to the planned expansion of NATO.

Despite what she called his “mental agility,” American reporters who briefly saw Yeltsin in person said the once hearty and bearlike president was gaunt, looked pale under heavy pancake makeup and spoke in a faint breathless voice.

Albright is the first senior U.S. official to meet Yeltsin since he underwent quintuple heart bypass surgery in November and then was laid low by pneumonia in January.
