Cigarette On Couch Blamed For Apartment Fire

From Staff And Wire Reports

A burning cigarette is blamed for a Sunday morning fire that caused about $4,500 in damage to a northeast Spokane apartment building.

Flames were visible and smoke was pouring from a ground-floor apartment when firefighters arrived at the Barrier Apartments, 2911 E. Diamond, about 8:15 a.m.

Battalion Chief Dan Brown said a cigarette left on a couch in the front room started the blaze.

The room was gutted, but firefighters prevented the fire from spreading much farther.

There were no injuries. Batteries were missing from a smoke detector in the apartment, Brown said. , DataTimes
