Yankees Starters Looking Good

Associated Press

David Wells’ problem with gout appears over. Kenny Rogers and Dwight Gooden appear to be throwing well.

Maybe the New York Yankees’ pitching staff will be OK.

“The staff is looking good,” pitcher David Cone said after Sunday’s workout. “Right now we’re throwing every other day. It will be nice to start working from a five-day rotation.”

Cone, Gooden, Andy Pettitte and Rogers pitched 15 minutes of batting practice. Wells threw for 12 minutes in the bullpen.

“We’re going to surprise a lot of people with our pitching,” Yankees owner George Steinbrenner said. “Our pitching will be a big key.”

Wells, who missed three days of throwing because of gout, has pitched from a mound twice in three days.

“They’re ahead because they’re not sore anymore,” Wells said of his teammates. “I’ll be back even with them within a week.”

Manager Joe Torre said Cone and Pettitte will pitch in Tuesday’s intrasquad game.
