Bus Bombings Kill Five, Hurt 60

Compiled From Wire Services

On Wednesday, the Western capital of Xinjiang was under a high state of security alert after terrorist bombs ripped through three public buses, killing five people and injuring 60. The attacks, which were apparently in response to a broad security crackdown ordered by the Communist Party leadership in Beijing to quiet the restive border region, were a grave embarrassment to Chinese authorities on the day of a memorial service to Deng Xiaoping.
