Playfair Nears Opening Day

Playfair Race Course will open its gates at noon Friday for its first winter horse racing season and first meeting since late 1995.

The experimental winter meet was given the go-ahead by the Washington Horse Racing Commission last week after a new safety rail was installed. Seven races are scheduled for opening day.

Playfair will race Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and two holidays through March 23. Post time will be 1 p.m.

All but the last two weeks of the Spokane season, originally scheduled to begin Dec. 6, will feature simultaneous racing with Emerald Downs in Auburn. Fans at both tracks will be able to wager on races at the other track. Races from both tracks will be shown at offtrack betting sites around the state.
