Waste Management Asking Rate Increase For Garbage Collection
North Side garbage rates outside the city limits might be on the rise.
Waste Management of Spokane, which collects garbage and recycles for 12,000 customers in North Spokane County, is asking the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission to approve a 10-12 percent increase effective Feb. 1, 1997.
The increase is needed to offset operating costs, including higher fuel and labor prices, and truck maintenance expenses, the company says.
If the full increase is approved, a resident with one trash can in a neighborhood with garbage pick up and recycling would see their bill increase $2, from $15 per month to $17. The monthly charge for two-can service would rise to $24.20 and for three cans, $31.40.
In areas without recycling, pick-up of a single can would jump to $15. Two cans would cost $22.20 and three cans, $29.40.
The last increase was about 5 percent last March to cover higher disposal fees, said Patterson.
