Wellpinit School District Wins Education Award

The Wellpinit School District on the Spokane Indian Reservation was named winner of the Exemplary Programs in Indian Education Award for 1996. The award is given to the nation’s best Indian education school or project.

George Raveling, former Cougar basketball coach at Washington State University, received the alumni association’s Honorary Alumnus Award.

Raveling, now living in Los Angeles, was honored for 11 years of loyal and dedicated service to WSU, for his enthusiasm, loyalty, advocacy for WSU and for displaying pride throughout the Pac-10 Conference, while coach of the Cougars, a spokesman said.

Carmela Conroy, a 1980 graduate of Central Valley High School, has been appointed to the Foreign Service of the United States.

Conroy is also a 1984 graduate of the University of Washington’s Jackson School of International Studies and a 1990 graduate of the UW’s School of Law. She is also a former deputy prosecuting attorney for Spokane County.

After she completes training, her first assignment will be in Sydney, Australia.

Three Spokane Washington State University students have earned scholarships:

Laura Lindley, daughter of Barbara Lindley, Spokane, earned a $500 Terrey-Matysik Scholarship. She is a senior studying elementary education and special education.

Timothy Eklund, son of Jerry and Anna Eklund, Spokane, received a $1,600 scholarship from the College of Business and Economics Scholarship. Eklund, a 1996 graduate of West Valley High School, is a freshman majoring in business.

Andrea Rickard, daughter of Wayne and Sherry Rickard, Colbert, received the $1,000 Margit Garthe Harrison Memorial Scholarship. A 1993 graduate of Mead Senior High she is a senior majoring in pharmacy.

Michele Crawford, Spokane, is featured in the January/February issue of Crafting Traditions for her cross-stitched photo album. Her design was selected from among hundreds of submitted crafts.

Bart Brazier, computer systems analyst at Washington State University at Spokane, received the 1996 WSU Spokane Employee Excellence Award which includes a plaque and $1,000. He has been with WSU since 1993.

Leahlyn (Johnson) Liere, a 1988 graduate of North Central High School, graduated from the University of New Orleans with a major in math education and a minor in geology.
