Dollar Dips Against Yen, Mark

The dollar ended slightly lower against the yen and mark Thursday after unexpectedly strong U.S. economic data rattled the American stock and bond markets on the first trading day of 1997.

But the dollar was mixed in other foreign exchange dealings and retraced its Tuesday decline against the pound, which fell broadly on profit-taking following a run-up to a four-year high.

Light trading distorted price movements, with many currency dealers still out for an extended New Year’s break.
