Yankees’ Wells Breaks Hand

Compiled From Wire Services

New York Yankees left-hander David Wells broke his pitching hand in a fight and will miss the start of spring training, his agent said.

Wells, who signed a $13.5 million, three-year contract with the Yankees last month, could face felony assault charges after being involved in a fight Sunday night that left two other men injured, according to a police spokesman.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have rejected All-Star catcher Mike Piazza’s request for a long-term contract and are expected instead to offer a two-year deal.

The Kansas City Royals signed left-handed reliever Mitch Williams to a minor-league contract and have invited him to spring training camp. Williams, 32, last pitched in the major leagues in 1995.

The Chicago White Sox, looking to shore up their starting rotation, signed 1990 Cy Young Award winning pitcher Doug Drabek to a one-year contract.
