Car Tires Slashed; Reward Offered

Janice Podsada Staff writer

Spokane police responded to two reports of tire slashings on the South Hill last Friday.

Police say the crimes occurred sometime between 10:30 p.m. last Thursday and 7:45 a.m. Friday.

The two new episodes followed in the wake of 15 reports of tire slashings that occurred between Christmas and New Year’s Day in the same area.

Last week, four tires were slashed on a car parked outside a residence in the 2800 block of East 34th and two tires were slashed on a car parked in the 3400 block of South Regal.

The Secret Witness program is offering a $200 cash reward for information that leads to the arrest of the vandals, said Dick Cottam, police spokesman.

Anyone with information is asked to call 327-5111. Callers do not have to give a their name but may use a code name or number for reward purposes.

Stolen items found in car

A sheriff’s deputy stopped a man for driving with an expired vehicle license about midnight Friday near 60th and Pittsburg.

A records check revealed the man had three outstanding warrants for his arrest, including warrants for second-degree burglary, possession of stolen goods and second-degree theft.

The deputy then searched the man’s car and discovered credit cards and checks reported missing in a car break-ins that occurred on the South Hill in the past few weeks.

The man, Rory D. Brown, 33, 6316 S. Pittsburg, was booked into the County Jail on a charge of second-degree possession of stolen property.

Garage blaze destroys car

Fire early Tuesday destroyed a car parked in a garage at 428 E. 18th.

Spokane firefighters said intense heat from the fire melted the vinyl siding on a rental home adjacent to the garage.

The fire was sweeping toward the home, where four people were asleep, when neighbors spotted the blaze, called the Fire Department and ran to the residence to alert Lyuobor Patinskaya, and her three children, ages 9, 11 and 12.

The four vacated the house, and no injuries were reported.

Two engine trucks, a ladder truck and 15 firefighters arrived at 1:47 a.m. to put out the fire, which had fully engulfed the garage in flames and destroyed the vehicle, a 1991 Chevrolet Cavalier.

Fire officials said the garage and residence are owned by Heidi Faye.

Cause of the fire is under investigation.
