The Rossland Winter Carnival begins Saturday and runs through Jan. 26 in the town at the foot of Red Mountain. Call the Rossland Chamber of Commerce for info: (250) 362-5666.

Recreational racers can run the gates every Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Schweitzer, with NASTAR racing from 1-2:30 p.m. Schweitzer’s Winter Carnival kicks off tonight with a party for 12- to 17-year-olds at the Caribou Room in the day lodge from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Info: (208) 263-9555.

The first Ski, Wine, & Dine program at Silver Mountain was cancelled because of nasty weather, but skiers can make reservations for the next, set for Jan. 24. Instruction, a videotaping session, and an afternoon of hors d’oeuvres included. Reservations: (208) 783-1111

Nordic skiing

Tune up for Spokane’s Langlauf (Feb. 2 at the Mount Spokane Nordic Trails) with the Rendezvous Mountain Marathon in the Methow Valley. 30k, up and over Rendezvous Pass. Info: (509) 997-3287.

Nordic trails at Newport’s Geo and Wolff ski areas are not groomed. Conditions are icy. The snow is packed, so skate skiing is still in good shape, but diagonal tracks are inconsistent.

Trails at Spokane golf courses, which don’t have enough snow to ski on, won’t be groomed again until another 4 inches of snow fall.

Snowmobiling

The cabin christening at the Spokane Winter Knights’ new warming hut, originally planned for December, has been rescheduled for Jan. 25. Meet in Usk at the Crossroads Restaurant at 9 a.m. Bring your friends for a lunch of hot dogs and chili. Info: 467-0152
