Students Receive Scholarships
Seven Spokane-area students received Presidential Scholarships for outstanding academic achievement at Western Washington University in Bellingham.
The students, their parents, class standings, awards and high schools are:
Heather Hart, daughter of Stuart and Theresa Hart, a WWU freshman and Lewis and Clark graduate, received a $1,000 award.
Karen King, daughter of Daniel and Sally King, a WWU freshman and LC graduate, received a $500 award.
Sarah Hiss, daughter of Dr. Glen and Mary Hiss, a freshman and LC graduate, received a $500 award.
Heather Leeming, daughter of Jim and Karen Leeming, a freshman and North Central graduate, received a $500 award.
Maria Bynagle, daughter of Hans and Janet Bynagle, a WWU junior and transfer student from Whitworth College, received a $1,000 award.
Kari Klonoff, daughter of Paul and Susan Klonoff, a Mead Senior High graduate and WWU freshman, received a $1,000 award.
Patrick Kohl, son of Brian Kohl and Susan Kohl, a Medical Lake High graduate and WWU freshman, received a $1,000 award.
Robert Del Mese Jr, son of Jaclyn Chalmers, Veradale, a graduate of Central Valley High and WWU freshman, received a $1,000 award.
Bonnie Svingen received the Pullman Kiwanis Lincoln Middle School Teacher of the Year award. She was nominated by the school faculty.
Svingen specializes in the advanced level of social science, literature, computing and communications classes. She has taught at Lincoln since 1986 and runs a TV station that produces a fiveminute daily news show for the school.
Marie Egbert Rendon, an instructor in the interpreter training program at Spokane Falls Community College, has received the Washington Association of Occupational Educators’ first Excellence in Teaching Award. Rendon, at SFCC since 1991, has written 13 books on teaching interpreter/sign language skills through a self-paced, competency-based learning program.
Alyson Reighley, a Gonzaga University junior, received a $1,000 scholarship from the Scottish Rite Foundation of Washington. She is majoring in international business, French and business management and is studying in Paris for her junior year. The 1994 graduate of Central Valley High School is the daughter of Dave and Cheryl Reighley, Veradale.
