Suspect Arrested In Brutal Rape

From Staff And Wire Reports

(From The Region, January 19, 1997:) The suspect being held for the rape of a North Side woman was misidentified in Saturday’s article. His name is actually Rory Dean Brown.

Spokane police arrested a suspect Friday in the brutal rape Nov. 4 of a North Side woman. Rory Dean Evans, 33, was arrested and booked into jail on suspicion of first-degree rape and burglary at the woman’s home on West Kiernan in northwest Spokane.

It’s the third time Evans has been arrested since November. The two other arrests were for burglary.

Sgt. Larry Evans said the scene of the crime was “so violent,” responding patrol officers waited for police investigators to arrive at the scene before exploring the woman’s entire home.

Police spokesman Dick Cottam said the victim was beaten by the rapist.

Det. Terry Boardman said police on Thursday received the results of a DNA test from the Washington State Patrol Crime Lab. Rory Dean Evans’ DNA sample matched that of the semen taken from the victim at her home, she said.

Boardman, the investigating detective, requested a blood sample from Evans while he was in jail after being arrested on a burglary charge shortly after the rape.

A search of Evans’ northwest Spokane home produced more evidence related to the November rape and burglary, according to police.

Police were flooded with calls after local media released composite sketches of the rapist a week-and-a-half after the incident.

“The response from the community was overwhelming,” Boardman said. “Based on all the information taken, we were able to sort through who could have and could not have done it.”
