China Orders Boeing Aircraft

The Boeing Co. said China Yunnan Airlines ordered two 737-300 aircraft valued at $68 million, its second sale to a Chinese airline this month.

China Yunnan will use the small jetliners to add new destinations in China and around Southeast Asia and to increase flight frequency to existing ones, Boeing said.

The 737-300 holds about 128 passengers.

China Yunnan, based in Kunming, operates 10 Boeing 737s and two larger 767-300s. It is scheduled to take delivery of another 767-300 later this month, Boeing said.

Earlier this month, Air China placed an order for two 747 jumbo jets valued at $383 million.

Orders from Chinese airlines are important for Boeing and European rival Airbus Industrie. The country is expected to be one of the world’s biggest buyers of new aircraft during the next 20 years as economic growth fuels demand for air travel.

Seattle-based Boeing expects China to order about 250 aircraft during the next five years.

“There are a number of aircraft purchases awaiting approval in Beijing,” said Boeing spokeswoman Cindy Smith.
