Vaughn Call Spokane

Service for Vaughn P. Call, retired city of Spokane planning director, will be at 1 p.m. today at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Spokane South Stake Center. Burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Call, who died Friday, was born in Yakima. He was 76.

He graduated from the Harvard Graduate Architecture School, and came to Spokane from Knoxville, Tenn., in 1951.

In 1974 he became the assistant to the city manager for planning and community development.

He was honored for his role as a professional planner in the preparation, adoption and implementation of the Spokane Riverfront Development Program, part of Expo ‘74, by the American Institute of Planners.

He served as a pilot in the Army from 1944-46 and was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Mr. Call is survived by his wife of 54 years, Eunice Call; six sons, Vaughn, Kevin and David Call, all of Springville, Utah, Joseph Call of Bountiful, Utah, Randy Call of Spokane and Mark Call of Federal Way, Wash.; four daughters, Diane Collins and Sylvia Kunz, both of Spokane, Laura Perdue of Redmond, Ore., and Deborah Call of Federal Way; two sisters, Nadine Tate of California and Verla Sanders of Utah; 44 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Margret Berger Loon Lake

Funeral Mass for Margret Berger, 72, was at 1 p.m. Monday at St. Mary’s Presentation Catholic Church in Deer Park. Graveside service will be held on Mother’s Day, May 11 at Woodland Cemetery in Deer Park.

Mrs. Berger died Friday. She attended Marycliff High School and was an accountant.

She and her husband, James Berger Sr., farmed between Valley, Wash., and Springdale. She operated a feed store in Springdale. They retired in 1977 and moved to Loon Lake.

Mrs. Berger was a founder of the Loon Lake Food Pantry. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Pasco and Loon Lake Women of the Moose.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, James Berger; two sons, Robert Berger of Edmonds, Wash. and James Berger Jr. of Van Nuys, Calif.; two daughters, Merrilee Bueno of Miami and Saundra Wilma of Springdale; 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Loon Lake Food Bank and Resource Center.

Eunice Kilgore Garfield, Wash.

Memorial service for Eunice Kilgore, 80, was Sunday at the Farmington Seventh-day Adventist Church. Inurnment will be later at Mountain View Cemetery in Farmington.

Mrs. Kilgore, a 20-year Garfield resident, died Friday. She was born in Edmond, Okla.

In 1939, she and her husband moved to California. Her husband operated a floor-covering business and Mrs. Kilgore worked as a cook. She retired in 1976.

Survivors include her husband Howard; a son, Robert Kilgore of Auburn, Wash.; a daughter, Linda Schroetlin of Garfield; three brothers, Donald Birth of Palo Alto, Calif., Herbert Birth of Harrah, Okla., and Robert Birth of Midland, Texas; two sisters, Shirley Sanders of Harrah and Alice Price of Angwin, Okla., and five grandchildren.

Nellie Skeels Addy, Wash.

Service for Nellie Rose Jacqueline Skeels, 78, is set for 2 p.m. today at New Life Christian Center in Addy. Burial will be at Chewelah Memorial Park. Schanzenbach Funeral Home in Chewelah is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Skeels, who died Thursday, was born in Port Angeles, Wash. She was a longtime Addy resident and was a member of two bowling leagues. She was also a member of the Senior Citizens in Chewelah and the Eagles Lodge.

Her husband, Harvey, died in 1981. Mrs. Skeels is survived by six sons, Alvin, Randy and Tim Skeels, all of Colville, Donald and Harvey Skeels Jr., both of Addy and Tommy Skeels of St. Maries; three daughters, Donna Cunningham and Mona Tweedy, both of St. Maries and Annette Watson of Springdale, Wash.; two brothers, John Marlett of Deer Park and Sid Marlett of Rugby, N.D.; two sisters, Leona Helbig of Silverton, Idaho, and Jeannie Wroe of White Salmon, Wash.; 22 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.

Jeannette Fruit Brooke Spokane

Service for Jeannette Fruit Brooke, 73, is planned for 1 p.m. Jan. 25 at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. Burial will be at Fairmount Memorial Park. Ball and Dodd Funeral HomeSouth is charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Brooke died Wednesday. She was born in El Paso, Texas.

Mrs. Brooke graduated from Cornell University in N.Y. She and her husband moved to Spokane in 1946.

Mrs. Brooke became became active in several community and civic organizations such as the Junior League of Spokane, Hutton Settlement Board, St. Nicholas Guild of The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, P.E.O., Women’s Investment Club and the Central Terrace Association.

She also had served as a volunteer at Cheney Cowles Museum.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Philip Brooke Jr.; four sons, Philip Brooke III, Thomas, Douglas and Richard Brooke, all of Spokane; a sister, Emily McKnight of Jacksonville, Fla.; five grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist or Hospice of Spokane.

Dorothy Maier Newman Lake

Funeral Mass for Dorothy C. Maier, 75, was Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Burial was at St. Joseph Cemetery in Trentwood.

Mrs. Maier, who was born in Michigan, died Friday.

She worked as a nurse in Spokane for 15 years, and retired from Presto Log Plastics Division in 1983.

Mrs. Maier, who had lived in Spokane since 1954 was a member of St. Joseph Parish, St. Joseph Altar Society and Ladies Guild, and was a supporter of the Spokane Metro Softball Association, Spokane Auto Racing Association, Toys for Tots and the Tuberculosis Foundation.

She is survived by her husband of 43 years, James Maier; five sons, Gordon, Bruce, Donald, Gary and Kenny Fisette, all of Spokane; three daughters, Dorothy Gepford and Glennis Moore, both of Spokane and Judy Fisette of Post Falls; two brothers, Earl and Doug Smith, both of Houghton, Mich.; 25 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Nina Nolen Spokane

Service for Nina J. Nolen, 92, is set for 1 p.m. Wednesday at Riplinger Funeral Home. Private burial will be at Riverside Memorial Park.

Mrs. Nolen, who died Friday, was born in Kalamazoo, Mich.

She graduated from North Central High School and was a homemaker. She had also worked for The Crescent.

She had lived in Spokane for 89 years.

Her husband, Neil, died in 1983. Mrs. Nolen is survived by a daughter, Jane Feely of Spokane; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children.

Ida Werner Spokane

Service for Ida Werner, 85, is planned for 11 a.m. today at Linwood Seventh-day Adventist Church. Burial will be at Fairmount Memorial Park. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Werner, who died Thursday, was born in McClusky, N.D.

She had lived in Spokane for more than 53 years and had worked as a housekeeper.

She was a charter member of the Linwood Seventh-day Adventist Church and served as head deaconess for about 30 years.

Her husband, John, preceded her in death. She is survived by a daughter, Eleanor Werner of Santa Rosa, Calif.; a son, Alvin Werner of Spokane; two brothers; three sisters; 11 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Edward Rau Spokane

Service for Edward J. Rau, 67, will be held later. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Rau, who died Thursday, was born in Beebe, Wash. He was raised in George and Quincy, Wash., and graduated from high school in Quincy.

He operated Inter-Mountain Hauling Services Inc., in George for 30 years. He retired in 1993, and had lived in Spokane for 11 years.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Wenatchee and the Moose Lodge in Quincy.

Mr. Rau is survived by his wife, Betty; three stepsons, Todd Nichols of Rathdrum, Idaho, Bill Nichols and Matt Bovee, both of Greenacres; a stepdaughter, Linn Barnett of Federal Way, Wash.; a sister, Delphine Toth of Coulee City, Wash.; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Gertrude Short Spokane

Graveside service for Gertrude E. Short, 88, is set for 11 a.m. today at Fairmount Memorial Park. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Short, who was born in Vera, Ill., died Friday. She had lived in Spokane for 59 years and was a bookkeeper.

She was a member of Women of the Moose.

Her husband, Howard Short, died last year. She is survived by two nieces, Evelyn Maske and Carolyn Sasse, and a nephew, Oscar Aderman, all of Illinois.

David Orrock Spokane

No service will be held for David L. Orrock. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Orrock, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Jan. 14. He was 71.

He worked for the railroad and had served in the Army during the Korean War.

He is survived by two sisters, Norma Barrett and Iris Rash, both of Spokane, and a brother, Melvin Bredeson of Deer Park.

Tom Dhaenens Veradale

No service will be held for Tom Dhaenens, 56, at his request. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Dhaenens, who died Saturday, was a lifetime Spokane resident.

He graduated from Central Valley High School.

He operated Tom Hog Produce in the Spokane Valley since 1984.

Survivors include his companion, Rita Mellick; two brothers, Robert Dhaenens of Spokane and James Dhaenens of Prineville, Ore., and a sister, Doreen Dieckhoff of Twentynine Palms, Calif.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Harry Ireland Spokane

Memorial service for Harry B. Ireland, 100, will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home.

Mr. Ireland died Jan. 15.

He was born in Scotland and came to the United States when he was 9. He attended Montana State College in Bozeman. He continued to live in Montana and worked on cattle ranches for many years.

He moved to Spokane 56 years ago and worked as a repairman.

He served in the Army during World War I and in the Navy during World War II.

His wife, Inez, died in 1988. Survivors include three nephews, Allan Nauck of Spokane, William Nauck of Portland and Robert (J.R.) Nauck of Choteau, Mont., and numerous great-nieces and nephews.

Clara Madden Spokane

Service for Clara Madden, 82, will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South. Burial will be Wednesday in Eureka, Mont.

Born in Wilsall, Mont., Mrs. Madden died Friday.

She came to Spokane 10 years ago from Montana where she worked as a nurse’s aide.

She is survived by her husband, Claud Madden; three sisters, Katherine and Irene Miller, both of Spokane, and Grace Mary Suko of Hardin, Mont.; five brothers, Robert, William, Alfred, John and Charles Miller, all of Spokane.

Fred Lofgren Spokane

Memorial service for Fred Lofgren, 81, will be at 2 p.m. today at St. Paul Lutheran Church. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Lofgren, who was born in Power, Mont., died Friday.

He moved to Spokane in 1937 and had owned the Texaco station at Fancher and Trent. He later worked for the Crescent Auto Center.

Mr. Lofgren was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Hillyard and the Disabled American Veterans. He attended St. Paul Lutheran Church.

His first wife, Isabel Lofgren, died in 1971. He is survived by his wife of 17 years, Georgia Lofgren; two daughters, Nancy McMurray of Spokane and Joan Lofgren of Finland; a son, Doug Lofgren of Burton, British Columbia; a stepson, William Kinzel of Yakima; a brother, Leonard Lofgren of Sicamous, British Columbia and six grandchildren.

Louie Miller Spokane

Memorial service for Louie E. Miller, 90, is planned for 10 a.m. Jan. 28 at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Waterville, Wash., Mr. Miller died Wednesday.

He was a 55-year Spokane resident and had worked for Union Pacific Railroad for 30 years.

He is survived by a son, Don Miller of Spokane; two stepsons, Jim and Mike Borgardts; a daughter, Patricia Getner of Portland; two stepdaughters, Sherry Poland and Judy Gilpin; a sister, Lydia Bakken of Spokane; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Carol Waterbury Spokane

Memorial Mass for Carol E. Waterbury, 63, was Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Colbert. There was private inurnment at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mrs. Waterbury, who was born in Biddeford, Maine, died Thursday.

She was a 15-year Spokane resident and worked as a job placement counselor for an employment agency.

She also worked with St. Joseph Catholic Church of Colbert for more than 10 years and was a volunteer for the Institute for Extended Learning Hillyard Center and the St. Vincent dePaul Society.

She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Walter Waterbury; five daughters, Lynn Waterbury of Long Beach, Wash., Ann McGetrick, Mary Repp and Nancy Scollard and Christine Gillette, all of Spokane and two grandchildren.

Emil Weber Veradale

Service for Emil Weber, 83, is set for 1 p.m. today at Hennessey Valley Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Pines Cemetery.

Mr. Weber, a longtime Spokane resident, died Thursday. He was born in Linton, N.D.

He worked as a welder for Kaman Bearing for 17 years and retired in 1976. He was a member of the Machinist Union.

Mr. Weber is survived by his wife of 55 years, Freda; three sons, James and Paul Weber, both of Spokane and Blaine Weber of Veradale; two brothers, Rueban Weber of Montana and Enoch Weber of Idaho; a sister, Mary Kunkel of Virginia; nine grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
