Helena Bockemuehl Clayton, Wash.

Funeral Mass for Helena “Helen” Bockemuehl, 74, is set for 11 a.m. today at St. Mary’s Presentation Catholic Church in Deer Park. Burial will be at Woodland Cemetery in Deer Park. Lauer Funeral Home in Deer Park is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Bockemuehl died Thursday.

She was born in Poland and was a prisoner of war with her family in Russian concentration camps in Siberia.

She escaped from Russia via Iran and migrated to the United States after World War II.

She worked as a chef in Spokane, Deer Park and Loon Lake, Wash., for more than 50 years and farmed in Clayton for 40 years.

She was a member of the Catholic Church and the Williams Valley Grange.

She is survived by her longtime companion, Eugene Conrad of Clayton; three daughters, Julia Grey of Wichita Falls, Texas, and Charlet Morse and Robbin Hansen, both of Deer Park; a son, Raleigh Petty of Spokane; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Juanita Ulrich Spokane

Visitation for Juanita V. Ulrich, 83, is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Service will follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Riverside Memorial Park.

Mrs. Ulrich, who died Sunday, was born in Spokane.

She was a homemaker and was active at Lilac Plaza.

Her husband, Thomas Ulrich, died in 1985.

She is survived by a daughter, Sherry Slater of Spokane; a brother, Charles Stinger of Spokane; five sisters, Arthilyn Lemley, Donna Rickard and Jewel Goans, all of Spokane, Beebe Marden of Seattle and Maxine Reposa of Watsonville, Calif.; and a granddaughter.

Walter Heider Connell, Wash.

Service for Walter R. Heider, 69, is set for 11 a.m. today at Connell United Methodist Church. Vault burial will follow at Connell Mountain View Cemetery. Danekas Funeral Home in Ritzville, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Heider, a longtime Franklin County farmer, died Friday from injuries suffered in an automobile accident.

He was a 1945 graduate of Lind High School and worked for farmers in the Lind area before going to work for Joe Hays at the Standard Oil Distributorship.

In 1949 he married Marcial Gust in Lind. They farmed for more than 47 years in Franklin and Adams counties.

Mr. Heider was a member and trustee at Connell United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Franklin County Wheat Growers, the Washington Association of Wheat Growers, Connell Grain Growers, the Connell Grange and the Ritzville Men’s Golf Club.

He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Connie Koch of Connell; two sons, Doug Heider of Kahlotus, Wash., and Mark Heider of Connell; two brothers, Alvin Heider of Lind and Robert Heider of Ritzville; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Memorial contributions may be made to Connell United Methodist Church.

Freda O’Neall Spokane

Visitation for Freda O’Neall, 82, is scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Graveside service is planned for 2 p.m. Saturday at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mrs. O’Neall, who was born on a farm in Verona, Mo., died Saturday.

She had lived in the Spokane Valley since 1939, when she and her husband, James, moved here from Kansas City, Mo.

Her husband died in 1981.

Survivors include a daughter, Bonnie Lommen of Pacific City, Ore.; a son, James O’Neall Jr. of the Spokane Valley; a brother, Hugh Lawson of Verona; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

John Schmierer Chewelah, Wash.

Graveside service for John William Schmierer, 84, is set for 2 p.m. today at the Odessa (Wash.) Cemetery Chapel. Strate Funeral Home of Odessa is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Schmierer, who was born in Odessa, died Saturday.

He attended the North Country School in Odessa and worked on the family farm until 1953, when he moved to Deer Park and continued farming.

He is survived by three sisters, Rose Jenkins of Spokane, Lorraine Flath of Los Angeles and Lillian Daniels of Odessa.

Edward Miller Jr. Big Creek, Idaho

Service for Edward J. “Ed” Miller Jr., 67, will be held today at 10 a.m. at the United Church of Kellogg. Shoshone Funeral Service in Kellogg is in charge of arrangements. Burial will take place at Greenwood Cemetery in Kellogg.

Mr. Miller, who was born in Hockerville, Okla., died Thursday.

He moved to the Silver Valley in 1954 and had worked as a diamond driller and miner for the Bunker Hill Mining Co., retiring in 1981.

Survivors include two sons, Mark Miller of Osburn, Idaho, and James Miller of Big Creek; four daughters, Sandra Murray of Post Falls, Karen Gange of Spokane, Patricia Marek of Kingston, Idaho, and Linda Miller of Moon Gulch, Idaho; his mother, Nettie Miller of Arkansas; two brothers, Harry Miller of Oklahoma and Richard Miller of Republic, Wash.; five sisters, Virginia Patterson of Oklahoma, Jean Medlock, Judy Loux and Jeanette Loris, all of Arkansas, and Jessie Suhor of Florida; 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Robert Schorzman Spokane

Service for Robert R. “Bob” Schorzman, 43, will be at 11 a.m. today at Christ Lutheran Church in Odessa, Wash. Burial will follow at the Odessa Cemetery. Strate Funeral Home in Odessa is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Schorzman, who died Saturday, was born in Odessa. He graduated from Odessa High School and attended Eastern Washington University and Western Washington University.

He managed the Waldenbooks store in Franklin Park Mall for many years and his parents’ apartment buildings in Browne’s Addition.

He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Odessa.

He is survived by his parents, Ray and Eleanor Schorzman of Odessa; and two sisters, Nancy Deife of Odessa and Susan Adams of Spokane.

LaDonna Reed Post Falls

Visitation for LaDonna Adele Reed, 56, will be held today from 3-8 p.m. at Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene. Service will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at 1 p.m. at Woodlawn Cemetery in St. Maries.

Mrs. Reed, who was born in Sedro Woolley, Wash., died Friday.

She grew up in Soap Lake, Wash., and had worked at local restaurants there as a food and beverage server.

She moved to Lewiston in 1977 and worked in cabinetmaking and the restaurant business before moving to Post Falls in 1992.

She was a member of the Clarkston, Wash., Eagles Auxiliary.

Survivors include her husband, Don; three sons, Richard Claffey of Clarkston, Jeff Claffey of Spokane and Jason Claffey of Rathdrum, Idaho; a daughter, Carla Claffey of Clarkston; a brother, Dennis Carpenter of Chehalis, Wash.; a sister, Lorene Mannen of Montana; and six grandchildren.

Vicki Lewis Spokane

Memorial service for Vicki L. Lewis, 52, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Whitworth College Chapel. Riplinger Funeral Home in charge of cremation.

Mrs. Lewis, who died Friday, was born in Calgary.

She had lived in Spokane for 19 years and worked as a coordinator of education placement and certification for Whitworth College.

She is survived by a daughter, Jennifer VanDine of Spokane.

Frances ‘Fran’ Richmond Coeur d’Alene

Memorial service for Frances V. “Fran” Richmond, 68, will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Bethel Baptist Church in Coeur d’Alene. English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Richmond, who was born in Montana, died Sunday.

She moved to Rockford in 1961 and to Spokane in 1986.

She moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1993 and was a homemaker and mother.

Mrs. Richmond was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church in Coeur d’Alene and Valley Fourth Memorial Church in Spokane and was a charter member of Latah Country Bible Church in Latah.

She was also a den mother for Cub Scouts, a member of the Rockford Birthday Club and Bible Study Fellowship and belonged to various parent-teacher fellowships.

Survivors include her husband, Ralph; two sons, Larry Richmond of Connecticut and Stan Richmond of Greenacres; three brothers, Bob Vail of Coeur d’Alene, Don Vail of Clarkston, Wash., and Dick Vail of Sandpoint; and six rgrandchildren.

Alice Anderson Post Falls

Memorial service for Alice F. Anderson, 53, will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Faith Presbyterian Church in Hayden, Idaho. English Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Anderson, who was born in Yakima, died Thursday.

She was raised in Yakima, where she graduated from A.C. Davis High School. She went on to graduate from Yakima Junior College and Central Washington State College.

Mrs. Anderson had taught home economics and was later a county extension agent, specializing in 4-H activities, in Colville, Wash. She was a tenured member of Washington State University faculty and had lived in Kettle Falls, Wash., and St. Maries and Silverton, Idaho, before moving to Coeur d’Alene in 1984.

She moved to Post Falls in 1993.

Survivors include her husband of 24 years, Paul; and two sisters, Dolly Stalder of Walla Walla and Jonette Grajeda of Renton, Wash.

Kathleen Dell Spokane

Memorial Mass for Kathleen Dell, 70, is planned for 10 a.m. Thursday at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes. Burial will be held at Fort Richardson National Cemetery in Anchorage, Alaska. Hennessey Smith Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Dell, who died Jan. 13, was born in Ireland and spent most of her life in Alaska.

She moved to Spokane after her husband, William Dell, died in 1984.

They had operated a restaurant in Alaska.

She was a member of the Catholic Church.

Mrs. Dell is survived by a stepson, Keith Dell of Spokane; several brothers in England and Ireland; three grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Florine (Blades) Howe Sullivan Spokane

Service for Florine J. (Blades) Howe Sullivan, 92, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport, Wash. Cremation will follow.

Mrs. Sullivan, who died Thursday, was born in Brainerd, Minn.

She had lived in the Usk, Wash., area for more than 79 years.

She married Jess Dye, and he preceded her in death.

She later married Bill Howe, and they farmed and had a milk route in Usk and Cusick, Wash. He was killed in a logging accident.

Mrs. Sullivan worked as a cook in logging camps and operated the Cusick Cafe, the Usk Hotel and the former Usk Triangle, now known as the Crossroads.

She later married Lester Sullivan. He also preceded her in death.

She played the piano and fiddle and had played with her brothers at local dances.

Survivors include a son, George Howe of Newport; two daughters, Doris Nelson of Usk and Arlene Little of Newport; 16 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Salvador ‘Sam’ Leiva Mariposa, Calif.

Burial Mass for Salvador “Sam” Leiva will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mariposa. Burial will be at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Hayward, Calif. Mariposa Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Leiva, a former Spokane resident, died Friday.

He was born in San Francisco.

He worked as a warehouse manager for the Chrysler Corp. and had lived in Spokane for 20 years before moving to California six years ago.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Carmen Leiva; two sisters, Mary Cortez of Riverdale, Calif., and Jessie Rebierjo of Pleasanton, Calif.; two brothers, Ralph Leiva of Riverdale and Frank Leiva of Lakeport, Calif.; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Mary Ann Bates Vancouver, Wash.

Service for Mary Ann Bates, 63, a former Spokane resident, was Monday at Hazel Dell Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Vancouver. Burial was Tuesday at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Bates, who died Saturday of cancer, was born in Montrose, Mo.

She grew up in Rupert, Idaho, and worked as a nurse.

She lived in Spokane for 17 years and worked at Eastern State Hospital.

She had worked in a medical clinic in New Mexico that cared for babies with the AIDS virus for a few years and moved to Vancouver three years ago.

Her husband, Reece Bates, died in 1989. He had owned the West Medical Lake Resort.

She is survived by a son, Jeff Bates of Vancouver; two daughters, Susan Aston of Vancouver and Kristine Bates-Fitzgerald of Centerville, Utah; her mother, Nell Vansant of Spokane; two brothers, Stanley Vansant of Medical Lake and Richard Vansant of Spokane; two sisters, Ede Pipes of Medical Lake and Kay Maughn of Phoenix, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Marie DuBois Spokane

Private service will be held for Marie J. DuBois. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of cremation.

Mrs. DuBois, 67, died Thursday.

She was born in McNary, Ariz., and raised in Chiloquin, Ore. She moved to Chewelah, Wash., in 1963 and to Spokane in 1970.

She worked as a bookkeeper in the medical field. Her husband, Buddy Bickers, preceded her in death.

She is survived by two daughters, Phyllis Haworth of Spokane and Susan Baker of Chewelah; her mother, Nellie DuBois of Chewelah; two sisters, Peggy Popp of Chewelah and Betty Horton of Redding, Calif.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Grace Simpson Spokane

Private service was held for Grace E. Simpson. Burial will be at Metaline Falls (Wash.) Cemetery. Mrs. Simpson, who died Jan. 9, was born in Ione, Wash. She was 89.

She was raised in Metaline Falls and moved to Portland, where she worked as a nurse and then as a certified welder in the shipyards during World War II.

She owned a nightclub in Mobridge, S.D., during the 1950s and was a cosmetician in Las Vegas, Nev., during the early 1960s.

In the late 1960s she operated a hearing aid and denture clinic in Boise. In the 1970s she moved to Metaline Falls to care for her mother and brother. She came to Spokane several years ago.

Two husbands, Ray Perkins and Jim Simpson, preceded her in death.

She is survived by a granddaughter, Claudia DeWitt of Spokane; five great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

Frank Dungan Spokane

Service for Frank R. Dungan was Tuesday at Holy Cross Cemetery Chapel. Burial was at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mr. Dungan, 89, died Friday.

He was born in Spokane and graduated from Hills Military Academy in Portland.

He later graduated from Washington State University, where he was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity.

He operated a farmer’s warehouse in Ephrata, Wash., where he had lived for 42 years. He and his wife, Katherine, moved to Spokane in 1978.

He was charter member of Elks Lodge No. 1816 in Ephrata.

Mr. Dungan is survived by his wife of 60 years; a son, James Dungan of Topeka, Kan.; two daughters, Mary Dotts of Kettle Falls, Wash., and Anne Massong of Yakima; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Lloyd Holladay Spokane

Service for Lloyd G. Holladay, 88, is planned for 1 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North. Burial will be at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Holladay, who was born in Reardan, Wash., died Friday.

He graduated from Reardan High School and served an apprenticeship with Colville Motors in Reardan. He moved to Cheney in 1930 and worked for Ratcilff Ford.

In 1934 Mr. Holladay opened the Cheney Motor Co., selling and servicing Chrysler/Plymouth products from 1934 until 1964.

He served two terms as mayor of Cheney, from 1948 to 1956, and moved to Spokane in 1967. He taught in the automotive department of Spokane Community College for four years and retired in 1971.

Mr. Holladay was also a musician and played the saxophone in the Reardan Ramblers, the Shrine Band and the Night Owls of Cheney.

He was a member of the Cheney Gun Club, the Hiyou Trap Club, Temple Masonic Lodge No. 42 in Cheney, Scottish Rite Bodies, El Katif Shrine Temple and Martha Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Lucile Holladay; two daughters, Doris Young of Boardman, Ore., and JoAnn Giffing of Hayden Lake, Idaho; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children.
