Pepsi Adopts New Advertising Theme
Pepsi-Cola is switching its advertising theme for the fourth time in six years, pitching itself as the soft drink for “Generation Next” in commercials debuting in Sunday’s Super Bowl.
The new theme is designed to reinforce Pepsi’s image as the drink for exuberant young people eager to face their future and create their own agenda.
Its bigger rival Coca-Cola has often played on its long history as a source of refreshment for people of all ages. Its current theme is “Always Coca-Cola.”
In a sense, the new theme takes Pepsi back to its roots. It invented the notion of a “Pepsi generation” in the mid-1960s and used the theme “The choice of a new generation” from 1984 through 1991.
Its most recent theme, introduced in 1995, has been “Nothing Else is a Pepsi.”
