East Valley Makes Bid For Wrestling Title Against Colville
Wrestling championships are at stake when the dual match season comes to an end next Thursday for Valley teams.
East Valley, which last week outscored two opponents 137-12 to improve its record to 4-0 in the Frontier League, is after its sixth championship in seven years.
The Knights travel to Colville on Tuesday in what is likely the title match.
Colville beat West Valley 50-12 Thursday night, handing the Eagles their first league loss. The Indians have won three straight times against the Knights.
So far, EV has not allowed more than three wins by an opponent in any one match. Out of 56 individual contests, Knight wrestlers have won 48 and are unbeaten in 7 of 14 weight classes.
In the Greater Spokane League, University needs only to beat winless Shadle Park to earn a share of its third straight championship.
Central Valley is at 5-2 Rogers and with a victory would join the Titans as part of a three-way tie for the league title.
Uneasy lies the crown
University High gymnasts lent credence to the adage, “uneasy lies the head that wears the crown.”
Rival Central Valley almost ended a four-year unbeaten string by the short-handed Titans on Thursday, losing by just .15 points, 166.6 to 166.45.
The effort was a combination of high-end performances by Bears Lindsay Linerud and Sarah Shryack and absence of Titan standout Kalie Cossette.
Linerud was first all around with a 35.3 score, winning beam and finishing second on floor exercise and bars. Shryack was second on vault and beam and fourth overall.
The host Titans escaped with its floor exercise showing led by Coleen Pierce and Tara Hulbert.
Pierce won the night’s final event and finished second overall. Hulbert was third all around and winner of the vaul and uneven bars.
University improved its record to 18-0 with one meet remaining. Thursday the team is at Mead against runnerup Ferris (16-2) and the fourth-place Panthers.
