Three WSU Track Athletes Post Provisional-Qualifying Marks

Three Washington State University track and field athletes gave NCAA provisional-qualifying performances at the Silver State Invitational Indoor Meet hosted by the University of Nevada at the Reno Exhibition Hall on Saturday.

The provisional-qualifying efforts were: Ian Waltz’ (sophomore, Post Falls, Idaho) shot put throw of 58-feet-7-1/4 for second place; Kevin Moore’s (sophomore, Richland) 35-pound weight throw of 62-3-1/2 for second place; and Francesca Green’s (sophomore, Kennewick) 6.96 seconds in the women’s 55-meter dash, a third-place finish. Last week in Cheney, Green ran a faster provisional mark of 6.89.

Athletes from 11 schools, including Pac-10 members Stanford and Oregon and WAC power Fresno State, competed in the meet.

Winning efforts for the Cougars included Green’s 19-7-3/4 leap in the long jump, Eric Kamau’s (junior, Nairobi, Kenya) 1:57.90 time in the 800, Bernard Legat’s (sophomore, Nairobi, Kenya) 8:22.07 time in the men’s 3000 meters, and Hilary Mawindi (junior, Gweru, Zimbabwe) at 49-10-1/2 to win the men’s triple jump.

Crew

Gonzaga University men’s crew swept Washington State University in the second annual indoor regatta held in the Martin Centre.

Using ergometers, the teams rowed 2,000 meters with winners being determined by the fastest cumulative times through two sessions.

On the men’s side, Gonzaga’s varsity edged WSU by 6.4 seconds while the JV won by a narrow 3.2-second margin. The GU frosh won with a 6.8-second span.

WSU pulled a sweep of its own in the women’s races. The WSU varsity defeated GU by 16.3 seconds, while the freshmen won by more than 25 seconds.
