Robert Hammes St. Maries
Service for Robert M. Hammes, 77, will be today at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in St. Maries. Vigil prayer service will be today at 7 p.m. at Yates-Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries.
Mr. Hammes, a longtime area journalist, died Thursday.
He graduated from high school and attended the University of North Dakota, where he received a bachelor’s degree in journalism.
Mr. Hammes worked for Westinghouse Electric in public relations in Pennsylvania and New York before serving with the Army after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He graduated from Officers Candidate School as a second lieutenant.
Mr. Hammes served in the Medical Corps in Europe and Germany before his military discharge in 1946. He completed a year of graduate work at the University of Minnesota before moving to the Northwest.
He lived in Ritzville, Wash., where he worked for the Journal Times, and later became a partner in the Aberdeen Times in Aberdeen, Idaho. Mr. Hammes later joined a partnership at the Minidoka County News in Rupert, Idaho, before buying the St. Maries Gazette Record in 1958.
He sold the business to his son in 1991 but continued working as a journalist.
Mr. Hammes had served as president of the Idaho Newspaper Association and was on its board of directors. He was also active in the International Society of Weekly Newspaper Editors and was the youngest ever to be named Master Editor Publisher of the Idaho Press Association in 1964.
He had co-authored one book and published two others and was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
Mr. Hammes was instrumental in raising funds for the construction of the St. Maries Plywood Mill and formed Dredge Mining Control ! in 1970.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Joey, in 1994.
Survivors include four children, Barbara Hammes and Thomas Hammes, both of California, Shelley Brown of Kent, Wash., and Dan Hammes of St. Maries; and six grandchildren.
Loretta Borgmann St. Maries
Memorial Mass for Loretta Borgmann, 87, was Monday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in St. Maries. Yates-Hodge Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Borgmann, who was born in Nebraska, died Friday.
She grew up and received her education in Nebraska before moving to Walla Walla in 1956. She moved to St. Maries in 1958 and co-owned and operated Al’s Shoe Repair for 26 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert.
Survivors include six children, Janice Carlson of Nebraska, Darlene Bennett of Oregon, Arlene Serafin of Arizona, Tom Borgmann of Otis Orchards, Jim Borgmann of Spokane and Barry Borgmann of St. Maries; two brothers, Lawrence Reding of Iowa and Clarence Reding of Oregon; 19 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Arthur Huber Spokane
Service for Arthur John Paul Huber, 84, is planned for 1 p.m. today at Zion Lutheran Church. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Huber, who died Thursday, was a lifetime Spokane resident.
He had worked as a rodeo rider, in livery stables and sawmills, and as a millwright at Inland Empire Paper Co.
Mr. Huber is survived by two sons, Douglas Huber of Checotah, Okla., and Gary Huber of Tyler, Texas; and six grandchildren.
Allen Mattausch Trudy Mattausch Waverly, Wash.
Rosary for Allen and Trudy Mattausch will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at The Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes in Spokane. Service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the cathedral. Schanzenbach Funeral Home of Fairfield is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. and Mrs. Mattausch were killed Thursday at their home.
Mr. Mattausch, 66, was born in Rosalia, Wash.
Mrs. Mattausch, 63, was born in Rockford.
He was a farmer, and she worked as a cook at the Fairfield Good Samaritan Center. They had been married 42 years.
They were both veterans of the Korean War and members of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 11326 in Cheney and Plaza Grange No. 888.
Together they had received numerous honors from the Veterans of Foreign Wars for their work within the organization.
Mr. Mattausch was also a member of Waverly Masonic Lodge No. 231.
Mrs. Mattausch was also a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Rockford.
They are survived by four sons, Richard Mattausch of Valleyford, Roger Mattausch and Robert Mattausch, both of Spokane, and Ronald Mattausch of Helena; and four grandchildren.
Mr. Mattausch is also survived by a brother, Randolph Mattausch.
Mrs. Mattausch is also survived by four brothers, Steve, Laurence, Conrad and Leo Berner, and a sister, Marie Normington.

Edna Larson Spokane
Memorial service for Edna Augusta Larson, 92, is set for 3 p.m. today at Riverview Care Center. Private burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Miss Larson, a retired elementary school teacher, died Friday.
She was born in Rosedale, Minn.
Her family moved to the Valleyford area in 1907 and later moved to Spokane.
Miss Larson began teaching after a year of teacher training. She later graduated from Whitworth College and taught elementary school in Bridgeport, Waterville and Lind, Wash., and in a country school near Valleyford. She finished her teaching career in the Spokane School District.
She held Bible study classes in her home and at Anna Ogden Hall Shelter for Women and Children. She was a member of First Covenant Church, the Spokane and the Washington Education associations and the American Association of Retired Persons.
Survivors include a nephew, David Scott of Spokane; a niece, Marilyn Scott of Mead; and four great-nieces and great-nephews.

Armilla LaRue Spokane
Memorial service for Armilla M. LaRue, 79, was Monday at Northwood Presbyterian Church.
Born in Calumet, Mich, Mrs. LaRue died Thursday.
She had lived in Spokane for 15 years.
Mrs. LaRue was a member of Northwood Presbyterian Church and volunteered at Holy Family Hospital. She was also a member of the Ladies Golf League at Sundance.
Her husband, Jack LaRue, died in 1967.
She is survived by a son, Edward LaRue of Spokane; a brother, Wilbert Doney of Redmond, Wash.; a sister, Alice Olgren of Michigan; two grandchildren and three great-granddaughters.

Jesse Mitchell Colfax, Wash.
Service for Jesse F. Mitchell, 65, will be at noon Wednesday at the Congregational Church in Wallace. Burial will be at Shoshone Memorial Gardens in Pinehurst, Idaho. Bruning Funeral Home of Colfax is in charge of arrangements.
Born in Nampa, Idaho, Mr. Mitchell died Thursday at home.
He served in the Navy from 1949 to 1956.
He moved to Mullan, Idaho, and worked in the mines there. In 1959 he moved to Wallace and worked for Hecla Mining Co.
Mr. Mitchell retired in 1988 and moved to Colfax in 1989.
Mr. Mitchell was a member of the Osburn (Idaho) Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He is survived by his wife, Pat; two sons, Terry Mitchell of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., and Ken Mitchell of Colfax; three daughters, Kay Keane of Post Falls, and Jan Mitchell and Lynn Teal, both of Colfax; a sister, Ann Hoskins of Page, Idaho; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

James Gallagher Jr. Spokane
Memorial service for James A. Gallagher Jr., 70, will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home. There will be private inurnment at Pines Cemetery.
Mr. Gallagher, who died Saturday, was born in Austin, Minn., and was raised in Waterloo, Iowa.
He attended Iowa State University.
He lived in the Coeur d’Alene area for more than 19 years and moved to Spokane in 1973. He worked at Kaiser Aluminum in Trentwood for 28 years before retiring in 1982. He served in the Navy during World War II and was a member of the United Church of God.
He was a Ham Radio operator for 32 years.
Mr. Gallagher is survived by his wife of 45 years, Joan; a daughter, Julie Roberto of Spokane; four sisters, Dorothy Davis, Shirley McConnell and Wanda Radford, all of Spokane, and Beverly Shaulis of Vancouver, Wash.; a brother, Norman Gallagher of Spokane; and a grandson.
Otto Ludecke Liberty Lake
Memorial service for Otto P. Ludecke, 65, was Monday at Liberty Lake Community Church.
Mr. Ludecke, who died Wednesday, was born in Sheridan, Wyo.
He had lived in the Spokane area since 1960 and was a registered pharmacist. He had worked for PayLess Drugs for many years.
He was also an agent with Gordon Curry and Co. Real Estate Agency in the Spokane Valley.
He served in the Air Force in Korea and was a Mason.
Mr. Ludecke is survived by his wife of 36 years, Vicki Ludecke; a son, Paul Ludecke of Seattle; a daughter, Karyn Ramey of Boulder Creek, Calif.; his mother, Marie Ludecke of Sheridan, Wyo.; and two sisters, Johanna Gostas of Sheridan and Elizabeth Belsly of Fort Worth, Texas.

Martha ‘Marti’ Cowart Williams Spokane
Memorial service for Martha L. “Marti” Cowart Williams, 42, is planned for 11 a.m. today at Pasadena Park Church of the Nazarene. Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Ms. Williams died Friday from cancer.
She was born in Texas and had lived in Spokane from 1966 until 1989. She moved away and then returned to Spokane three years ago.
She is survived by a daughter, Erica, her mother, Wanda Cowart of Long Beach, Calif.; her father, Jess Cowart of Vancouver, Wash.; two brothers, Stanley and Michael, both of Spokane; her grandmother, Zeola Hartzell Shults of Roswell, N.M.; and a grandson.

Alice ‘Margaret’ Lewis Spokane
Memorial service for Alice “Margaret” Lewis, 82, will be at 10 a.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home. Private graveside service will be at Fairmount Memorial Park.
Mrs. Lewis, who was born in Adams County, N.D., died Friday.
She had lived in Spokane for more than 45 years and was a homemaker.
Mrs. Lewis was a member of First Assembly of God Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Lewis.
Survivors include two daughters, Twila Taylor of Spokane and Shirley Grose of Los Angles; two sons, George Lewis of Missoula and Douglas Lewis of Seattle; a sister, Ada Hoag of Los Altos, Calif.; 18 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.
Richard Emerson Spokane
Service for Richard “Dick” Emerson, 65, is set for noon today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Private burial will be at Riverside Memorial Park.
Mr. Emerson died Thursday.
He was born in Spokane and attended schools in Ford and Tum Tum, Wash.
He worked for HyGrade Meat Packing and Great Northern Railway in Spokane before going to work at Kaiser Aluminum in Trentwood. He retired in 1982 after 30 years.
Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Janet Emerson; two daughters, Nancy Emerson and Wanda Schulz, both of Spokane; a brother, Jake Emerson of Spokane; a sister, Evelyn Henne of Ann Arbor, Mich.; and two grandsons.
Harriet Fraser Spokane
Service for Harriet D. Fraser, 83, will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Fraser, who died Saturday, was born in Libby, Mont., and raised in Norway.
She had lived in the Spokane Valley for 53 years and worked as a secretary for an insurance company.
Mrs. Fraser is survived by a daughter, Judy Roberts of Edmonds, Wash.

Michael Delich, M.D. Spokane
Memorial service for Dr. Michael Delich, 83, was Monday at Royal Park Care Center.
Dr. Delich, who was born in Yugoslavia, died Thursday.
He received his medical degree from the University of Zagreb in Yugoslavia. He served his internship and residency at Tacoma General Hospital from 1952 to 1954.
He became a U.S. citizen in 1959.
Dr. Delich served as a staff psychiatrist at Eastern State Hospital and Interlake School until 1979.
He is survived by two sons, Michael Delich Hallsenius, of Eugene, Ore., and Phillip Delich of Richmond, Va.; a daughter, Magrete Delich Hallsenius of Sweden; and three grandchildren.
Edgar Richardson Spokane
No service will be held for F. Edgar Richardson, 86, at his request. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Richardson, who died Friday, was born in Bonners Ferry, Idaho.
He graduated from Washington State University with a degree in business administration. At WSU he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.
Mr. Richardson worked for Spokane Hardware Inc. and retired as sales manager after about 25 years.
He was a member of the El Katif Shrine and was a charter member of the Palomino Patrol. He was also a member of the Inland Empire Fly Fishing Club.
Mr. Richardson is survived by his wife of 61 years, Barbara Richardson; a son, Robert Richardson; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
