Fight Tour Begins
Oscar De La Hoya, who carries a food stamp in his wallet as a reminder of how things once were, will get $10 million for his April 12 fight against Pernell Whitaker.
Whitaker will make at least $6 million for his WBC welterweight title defense on pay-per-view at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.
De La Hoya has emerged as a star in a star-starved sport since coming out of East Los Angeles to become the only U.S. gold-medal boxer in the 1992 Olympics. The WBC super lightweight champion now lives in Whittier, Calif., but insists on being introduced as from East L.A.
The news conference at Madison Square Garden in New York launched a publicity tour by the two fighters that will continue today in three Texas cities, then move on to Las Vegas and Los Angeles on Thursday and Mexico City on Friday.
Having twice lost to Riddick Bowe on disqualification for low blows, heavyweight Andrew Golota is suing Bowe and Madison Square Garden over the riot following their July bout in New York.
Golota and cornerman Sam Colonna charge they were injured because Bowe was negligent in supervising his employees and because the Garden, according to the lawsuit filed in state Superior Court in Jersey City, N.J., failed to provide adequate security.
