Pie Auction Proceeds Will Help Replace Stolen Items

A pie auction this Friday at the Wayside Community Center will help raise money to replace furniture and dishes and repair the piano damaged in a series of burglaries just before Christmas.

Some of the stolen items have been recovered.

The burglaries threatened to stop the annual Christmas program presented by the Half Moon Women’s Club, but the determined group pulled together, buying and borrowing to replace the stolen items in time for the show.

“It looked like a disaster area, but we rallied the troops,” said Thelma Bloom, women’s club chairman.

The women’s club held their first Christmas program in 1926, then held it off and on until 1959 when it became and annual event at the community center.

The women’s club sponsors a number of community fund-raisers each year including a spaghetti feed, arts and crafts sale and quilt auction. Proceeds benefit various Spokane charities.

The pie auction begins at 7 p.m. at the Wayside Community Center, a mile west of Highway 395 on Monroe Road.

“Bring a pie, buy a pie,” said Bloom.
