Hawks Proposal Includes Spokane

State Rep. Steve Van Luven, who admits he hasn’t attended a Seattle Seahawks game in five years even though the football team is headquartered in his district, said Thursday he has developed a stadium plan that will benefit several Washington cities.

Van Luven, R-Bellevue, said in an interview after the Legislature’s first hearing on whether to build a new, football-only stadium in Seattle that his plan will include money for improvements to Spokane’s convention center, Yakima’s Sun Dome, the Tacoma Dome and public fields around the state.

He declined to reveal the source of public funding, but said no stadium bill can pass without votes from lawmakers representing areas outside Seattle.

Raiders hire Bugel

Joe Bugel, who was considered for the Oakland Raiders’ head coaching job in 1995 and lost out to Mike White, was hired to replace the fired White.

Among other candidates who interviewed for the job were Raiders special teams coach Rusty Tillman and Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Jon Gruden.

Jets pursue Parcells

The New York Jets want Bill Parcells, and the New England Patriots want compensation. The Jets offered their second-round draft picks in 1997 and 1998, and $1 million for the right to hire Parcells as their coach, ESPN reported.

The network also said Patriots owner Bob Kraft wants the Jets’ first-round selection in this year’s draft, which is the top overall pick. It’s unlikely the Jets would part with the pick.

The fates of the 1998 Super Bowl and the San Diego Chargers’ 1997 season will be determined Feb. 20, when a judge is expected to rule on a lawsuit filed by opponents of expanding Jack Murphy Stadium. The problem could benefit Pasadena, which is offering the Rose Bowl… . The company that arranged a Super Bowl bungee exhibition denied giving inadequate training to handlers who assisted in a fatal jump during rehearsal… . Figures released Thursday showed Nevada bookmakers won $2.26 million on the Super Bowl, down from $7.1 million for the game a year ago.
