Dollar Touches New High Vs. Mark
The dollar touched another 3-1/2-year high against the mark and ended stronger in most other currency dealings Tuesday on supportive comments from Germany’s central banker and a top U.S. Treasury official.
Bundesbank President Hans Tietmeyer and Deputy Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers surprised the market by implying the United States and Germany wouldn’t oppose a further strengthening of the dollar. Their remarks helped the dollar overcome weakness from data suggesting the U.S. economy is slowing.
