Two Accused Marines Hear Charges In Court Kidnap, Rape, Assault Charges Stem From Campground Attack

Associated Press The

Two Marines were arraigned Tuesday on charges of kidnapping, rape, assault and sex abuse in an attack on a couple who were camping in the Mount Hood National Forest.

Sgt. Clinton Bergmann and Sgt. Rudolph Jackson each face two counts of kidnapping and rape and one count of assault and sex abuse in the June 21 attack at the Clear Lake campground in the Mount Hood National Forest.

Bergmann, 24, of Vancouver, Wash., remained free on bail but Jackson, 29, of Gresham, remains in the Klickitat, Wash., County Jail with bail set at $200,000.

Bergmann is a recruiter based in Milwaukie and Jackson works as a clerk at the Portland Marine recruiting office.

The pair are accused of kidnapping Henry Thompson, 33, and his 23-year-old female companion while they were camping among a group of Marines and their recruits. Jackson and Bergmann were among 21 Marines who had taken 130 recruits on an overnight outing.

It was later learned that Jackson had been accused of stealing a vehicle from a woman in July 1996.

Thompson said Jackson awakened him, pointing a flashlight in his eyes. He said he was beaten and taped to a tree and his companion was dragged into the bushes and raped.

Jackson is the only one accused of raping the woman. Bergmann is charged with rape because authorities believe he aided and abetted Jackson.

A recruit on security patrol heard Thompson’s cries for help and alerted other Marines.
