Zimmerman Aims For 3rd Win

Paul Delaney Correspondent

Jeff Zimmerman hopes to continue the roll he’s on this season at Stateline Speedway.

The current points leader and defending champion in the Northwest Modified Series takes a two-race winning streak into Saturday’s 75-lap feature.

Because of weather-related postponements, this is just the third race for the mods. All have been run at the track near Post Falls.

“We’d like to see three in a row,” Zimmerman said. “We’ve never done that before.

“It’s been pretty nice (winning two straight), but once the other guys get going it probably won’t stay that way.”

The Canadian Oldtimers and Hobby Stocks will also be part of Saturday night’s show, which begins at 6.

Stateline presents its annual Demolition Derby and fireworks show beginning at 5:30 tonight. The winner of the demo takes home a $1,500 first-place check.

To avoid the usual long lines at the ticket window, go to Post Falls Trustworthy Hardware for advance tickets.

Pro Gas Drags back at SRP

The Spokane Pro Gas Association is making up for lost time.

It took the association six weeks before it was able to run its first race last weekend, but the 9.90 and 10.90 elapsedtime race cars are back for a second consecutive week, Saturday night at Spokane Raceway Park.

Jeff Mann took the Pro Gas (9.90) win last week while Mark Resen was the Mod Gas (10.90) winner. Gates open at 4 p.m., with eliminations at 7:30.

Joining the Pro Gas Association will be SRP’s regular bracket drag racers.

Friday night features a drag and oval track doubleheader. The fifth race in the Mountain Dew High School Drag Racing Series runs on one side of the twin-track complex, while a demolition derby and fireworks show takes place on the half-mile.

Saturday night on the half-mile oval is the third running of the River City Cup for Hobby Stocks at SRP. Time trials begin at 5:30.

Kopp has season’s best finish

Mica’s Joe Kopp continues to rebound from a slow start on the AMA Grand National Dirt Track Series, finishing second to Scott Parker in last Saturday’s race at Lima, Ohio.

Kopp, who suffered injuries in a Memorial Day Weekend crash, has missed one race, but has climbed into seventh place in the Grand National point standings.

Pro Outlaw Karts have busy weekend

Tonight leads to a busy weekend for the Pro Outlaw Kart Racing Association. First will come the running of the first annual Ben Hunt Memorial at the ORV Park at 6.

Ron Nelson has moved into the POKRA points lead, but not by much. Nelson holds a six-point lead over John Reidburn and is nine ahead of David Traviss.

Saturday the karts head east to Tuscor Speedway in Trout Creek, Mont., to take part in an invitational race as part of the second annual Andy Green Memorial race that begins at 2 p.m. MDT.

My how time flies

Amazing to think that it’s been 10 years since the first running of the Spokane Grand Prix street race.

That first of two races ran around the perimeter of Riverfront Park July 3-5, 1987. Remember how rain washed out the Friday practice in the inaugural event, cut short Saturday qualifying and delayed Sunday racing?

Has it really been that long since the streets have been repaved in Spokane?
