Hydro Speeds Rise

Compiled From Wire Services

The speeds went up in qualifications for the Madison Regatta, and so did Mark Tate’s chances to become a rare three-peat winner of the Indiana Governor’s Cup.

A frustrated Tate was barely over 140 mph a day earlier and admittedly was baffled by his Close Call hydroplane’s poor handling through the tight corners of the 2-1/2-mile Ohio River course.

Whatever his crew did to the boat after that seemed to work.

Tate’s fast lap put him within 3 mph of Dave Villwock’s series leader and race favorite Miss Budweiser.
