Pettitte, Fielder Spark Yanks’ Win

Andy Pettitte pitched a six-hitter for his first career shutout and Cecil Fielder hit his 299th career homer Saturday as the New York Yankees won for the fifth time in their last six road games by defeating the Toronto Blue Jays 8-0 in Toronto.

Pettitte (9-5) struck out six and walked two in his fourth complete game of the season, winning for the first time in his last five starts. He has allowed two runs over his last 21 innings.

Rangers 8, Athletics 1

Arlington, Texas

Juan Gonzalez homered twice and drove in six runs and Bobby Witt allowed three hits over eight innings as Texas defeated Oakland.

The A’s Mark McGwire blasted the second longest homer in the history of The Ballpark in Arlington, 449 feet for his major-league leading 31st.

White Sox 11, Red Sox 8

Chicago

Tony Pena drove in four runs and Mike Cameron knocked in three to lead Chicago to victory over Boston.

Frank Thomas, who will miss Tuesday’s All-Star Game because of lingering sore rib muscles, hit his 17th homer leading off the fifth.

Indians 8, Royals 4

Cleveland

Pat Borders, playing because Sandy Alomar was given the day off, had three hits and Charles Nagy won his ninth game as Cleveland defeated Kansas City.

Cleveland, in first place in the A.L. Central, improved to seven games over .500 for the first time this season.

A crowd of 42,892 - Cleveland’s 170th straight sellout - turned out for Larry Doby Day. Doby, the first black player in the A.L., was honored before the game on the 50th anniversary of his debut with the Indians.

Tigers 6, Orioles 5

Detroit

Pinch-hitter Phil Nevin hit a two-run homer and Travis Fryman scored the winning run on a wild pitch during an intentional walk as Detroit beat Baltimore.

The game featured a matchup of All-Star pitchers, but neither Baltimore’s Mike Mussina nor Justin Thompson of the Tigers figured in the decision.

Milwaukee

Cal Eldred rebounded from a terrible month of June with seven innings of three-hit ball and Milwaukee snapped a five-game losing streak with a victory over Minnesota.

Clearing the bases

Brady Anderson was out of Baltimore’s starting lineup, but the Orioles outfielder still plans to play in Tuesday’s All-Star Game. “Do you really think I’d miss that game?” Anderson said a day after he suffered leg bruises when hit by a pitch in each game of a doubleheader against the Tigers.

Hideki Irabu pitched a two-hitter in his final start for Columbus as the Clippers defeated the Toledo Mud Hens 12-0 Saturday in the seven-inning first game of an International League doubleheader. … The White Sox officially retired Jackie Robinson’s No. 42 in pregame ceremonies. … With 55 RBIs, Jay Bell is within five of the Royals’ season record for a shortstop.
