Kenyan Students Protest Crackdown

Compiled From Wire Services

Fierce clashes broke out at the University of Nairobi Wednesday as hundreds of students protested a violent government crackdown on opposition leaders seeking constitutional reforms.

Witnesses said riot policemen broke down doors and used tear gas to force students out of their dormitories on the main campus in downtown Nairobi Wednesday. Some students were clubbed as they struggled to pack and flee, they said. At least 20 people were reported hurt.

Later in the day, violence erupted at a second campus of the university about 10 miles northwest of the capital. Hundreds of students hijacked and burned a city bus, then threw rocks at cars until paramilitary policemen came and dispersed them.
