Substations Rely On Volunteer Help

Janice Podsada Staff writer

COPS substations are an all-volunteer service force of concerned neighbors and business owners. They function as a clearinghouse for people in need of police, social or personal services.

The first Community Oriented Policing Service substation opened in 1992 in response to the disappearance of two girls who were abducted in 1991 from their West Central neighborhood. One of the girls was found dead, and the other is still missing.

Members of the West Central Task Force opened the first substation as a way to increase the community and police presence in their neighborhood. Today, 10 substations dot the city.

If you want to be a volunteer for COPS Southwest, 820 S. Monroe, call 625-3328.

Other South Hill substations are: COPS Southeast, 2824 E. 29th, 625-3326; and COPS East Central, 3001 E. Fifth, 625-3330.
