Kurri Signs With Avalanche

Compiled From Wire Services

Jari Kurri, the 11th highest scorer in NHL history with 1,376 points, jumped from the Anaheim Mighty Ducks to the Colorado Avalanche as an unrestricted free agent.

Kurri, 37, signed a one-year contract. A native of Finland, he is the highest-scoring European-born player in league history.

The Boston Bruins re-signed defenseman Dean Chynoweth to a two-year contract. Chynoweth, 28, enters his third season with the Bruins. Last year he had three assists in 57 games. He has totaled four goals and 18 assists in 239 career games over 10 seasons.

John Spano gave up his short-lived role as owner of the New York Islanders under terms of an agreement brokered by NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman.

The Dallas businessman’s control of the team came into question when he failed to make a $17 million payment on the $165 million purchase price of the team. Control of the team goes back to former owner John Pickett, who will look for another buyer.
