Pend Oreille County Disaster Aid Sought

From Staff And Wire Reports

Gov. Gary Locke asked Friday that Pend Oreille County be declared a federal disaster area in order to receive financial aid for damage from spring floods.

Aid was requested for damaged public facilities and for public agencies providing such services as utilities, housing repairs and temporary housing assistance.

Preliminary assessments indicate 144 homes and businesses were damaged. Estimates show about $1.3 million in public costs, including damage and the extra services provided by emergency response agencies.

A state of emergency was declared in Pend Oreille County on May 22. The Washington National Guard provided water and manned traffic control points until June 29.
