Woodeforde Gets Bageled

Mark Woodforde, who made Wimbledon doubles history a week ago, was beaten 6-0, 6-0 Friday by Brett Steven of New Zealand in the quarterfinals of the Hall of Fame tennis tournament in Newport, R.I.

Woodforde was coming off a record-tying fifth consecutive Wimbledon doubles title with partner Todd Woodbridge. He was playing his third match in four days.

In another quarterfinal, third seed Grant Stafford of South Africa, rallied to defeat American David Wheaton 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Fourth-seeded Magnus Norman of Sweden beat Jeff Tarango 6-2, 6-3 Friday and reached the semifinals of the Swedish Open in Bastad, Sweden.

In today’s semifinals, Norman will play unseeded Juan Antonio Marin of Spain who beat Sweden’s Thomas Nydahl 6-2, 6-1 in a 63-minute match. In the other semifinal, No. 5 Karol Kucera of Slovakia will play Carlos Costa of Spain.
