Low-Caste Indians Mourn After 10 Killed By Police

Compiled From Wire Services

Shouting “Burn the police!” and throwing stones, at least 8,000 low-caste Indians streamed toward a Bombay crematorium Sunday to mourn 10 people killed by police in a city slum.

The two children and eight adults cremated were shot and killed by police trying to quell rioting that broke out Friday.

Open trucks carried the bodies, which were draped in white sheets and covered with red and yellow flower petals, in a slow, three-mile procession from the site of the rioting to the crematorium. Mourners walked alongside.

Residents rioted after finding the statue of Babasaheb Ambedkar - the messiah of low-caste people - draped in a garland of shoes, considered a vulgar insult in India.
