Tornado Blows Camping Rig Into Lake

Compiled From Wire Services

A tornado touched down Sunday near a marina and campground, blowing a camper into a lake and injuring three family members who escaped from the camper just before it went into the water.

“Evidently, they just kind of rolled out when the camper rolled over,” Geary County Sheriff Bill Deppish said. “The camper appears to be in the lake.”

Jennifer Brown, 32, was the most seriously injured with cuts. Her husband, Jerry Brown, 41, and daughter Joanna suffered scrapes and bruises.

The tornado destroyed one building and heavily damaged another. Several other campground vehicles were also damaged.

The tornado swept through this city in eastern Kansas about 8:15 p.m., part of a line of severe thunderstorms that spawned four tornadoes across Kansas and dropped large hail on parts of central and eastern Kansas.

No other damage or injuries were reported.
