Otc Gains Foothold In Two Markets Printer Manufacturer Lands Contracts In Mexico, Far East

Michael Murphey Staff writer

Another Spokane high-tech manufacturing company is reaching to Mexico and the Far East to expand its markets.

Output Technology Inc., a manufacturer of high-speed computer printers, has signed an original equipment manufacturer agreement with ATI de Mexico, S.A. de C.V., of Mexico City to supply high-performance printers for the Mexican market.

The company has also won a contract from the Public Electric Authority in Bangkok, Thailand, to supply printers that will be used to print utility bills and statements for the authority.

Warren Rainer, OTC’s vice president of sales and marketing, said the Mexico agreement was made possible in part by the North American Free Trade Agreement.

“This agreement represents the spirit and intent of free trade as envisioned under NAFTA,” Rainer said. “This is a case where goods manufactured in the U.S. have found a new market thanks to more liberal trading status between the United States and Mexico, and we are very excited to be a significant part of this agreement.”

Two other Spokane high-tech manufacturers, Key Tronic Corp. and Telect Inc., have established a strong presence in Mexico by placing manufacturing facilities there. OTC, however, will manufacture its printers for the Mexican market in Spokane.

The agreement will allow ATI to purchase printers from OTC’s line of U.S.-manufactured dot matrix printers. ATI will resell the printers under their own brand label into the Mexican market.

ATI has been in business in Mexico since 1980 and has an installed base of more than 150,000 printers.

The initial purchase orders for the Thailand deal call for OTC to deliver 150 laser printers and stackers in the next 60 days, Rainer said. The initial order is valued at $750,000.

“This order is important to the company for the sales value it represents today,” Rainer said, “but equally important is the future laser consumables revenue opportunity.”
