Mcgwire Would Try St. Louis

Mark McGwire had said he would resist a trade to a National League team for a number of reasons, including the fact that he would have to learn a new league and new pitchers in the heat of a pennant race. But he has changed his mind.

McGwire said he would go to St. Louis if the Cardinals work out a deal with the A’s before the trade deadline.

The lure, McGwire said, is not so much to be reunited with manager Tony La Russa and former teammates Dennis Eckersley, Todd Stottlemyre, Willie McGee, Mike Gallego and Rick Honeycutt, but to play on a contending team.
