25 Hit With Title Ix Complaints
The National Women’s Law Center said Monday it had filed sex discrimination complaints against 25 U.S. colleges and universities, charging that the schools have given disproportionately more scholarship dollars to male athletes.
Major schools targeted by the center’s complaints include Duke University and Wake Forest University in North Carolina, Vanderbilt University in Tennessee, Brigham Young University in Utah and Boston College.
Marcia Greenberger, founder and co-president of the non-profit center, said the schools had failed to comply with Title IX of the 1972 Education Amendments. That law prohibits sex discrimination in awarding athletic scholarships at schools that receive federal funds.
For example, Title IX requires that if 35 percent of a school’s varsity athletes are women, the school must award 35 percent of its athletic scholarships to women.
