Lc Seniors Poised For Yet More Growth

Katherine Sluder Lewis And Clark High School

Longfellow says in his “Psalm of Life:”

Let us then be up and doing,

With a heart for any fate;

Still achieving, still pursuing,

Learn to labor and to wait.

The big tree in our courtyard whose canopy of leaves creates alternating patterns of light and dark on the concrete and rock below was once not very tall at all.

Perhaps a student or faculty member planted a tiny seedling into the patch of soil designated for just such an endeavor, and the fragile infant persevered against bitter winter cold, scorching summer heat and overzealous students to blossom into the shady refuge and fragment of nature students have come to appreciate and even take for granted.

Presently, our time-weathered tree is wounded, damaged by ice storms and strong winds, but it is a survivor.

Its many branches work cooperatively to nourish itself, combining their efforts to ensure survival. The tree keeps growing, its roots expanding beyond the tiny confines once much too large for the baby seedling.

The class of ‘97 has followed a similar plan and is likewise growing, exceeding bounds of intellectual growth, social development and community involvement - working together as one entity to change things for the better and guarantee one another’s success.

We are perseverance, determination and grit. We open our arms to the sun and to new possibilities but don’t limit ourselves in how far we can go.

We are standing on the shoulders of giants. Just watch us grow!
