$5 Million Sought For Murray Campaign
A feminist fund-raising committee wants to raise $5 million for U.S. Sen. Patty Murray’s 1998 re-election campaign, placing the Washington state Democrat in its “highest priority” category.
Emily’s List, a Washington, D.C.-based organization, sent out letters last week urging members to immediately write checks to the re-election campaigns of Murray and Sens. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., and Carol Moseley-Braun, D-Ill.
“The future of women’s rights depends deeply on the re-election of all three of these Democratic women senators,” Emily’s List President Ellen Malcolm wrote.
The organization characterized Murray’s opponent, Rep. Linda Smith, R-Wash., as an abortion opponent and a leader of the pro-life caucus in the House.
Emily’s List said Murray will need at least $5 million to win re-election, a sum equal to what GOP Sen. Slade Gorton raised in 1994.
