Point Guard Signs With Cards

Nathaniel Bailey, a point guard who led Odessa (Texas) College to the NJCAA men’s basketball tournament last season, has signed a letter of intent to play for North Idaho College, coach Hugh Watson said.

Bailey, who scored 36 points in two NJCAA Tourney games, announced in April he planned on transferring to NIC.

Bailey must earn 12 summer credit hours to be eligible at NIC, Watson said.

NIC is having trouble scheduling non-conference men’s basketball games, Watson said.

The Cardinals have only three non-league games lined up. On Tuesday, though, Tyler (Texas) College apparently committed to play in NIC’s Thanksgiving tournament.

“Nobody wants to play us,” Watson said.

Scholarship set up

Coeur d’Alene Marathon officials have donated $500 that will be used toward establishing a track and field/cross country scholarship, NIC athletic director Jim Headley said.

Headley said the money probably will go to a Kootenai County athlete. The marathon uses some of NIC’s buildings and equipment to help stage the event.

Hawkins Mesa-bound

North Idaho College pitcher Shelby Hawkins has signed a letter of intent to play baseball at Mesa State, a Division II college in Grand Junction, Colo., according to his father, Kenneth.

Hawkins, a Coeur d’Alene High grad, had a solid sophomore season.

NIC teammates Paul Wilson (first base) and pitcher Marc Pizzoferrato are mulling offers from Mesa State.
