Brewer Gets Win By Replacement

Jose Mercedes, a last-minute replacement for ailing Scott Karl, allowed three hits over eight innings and Dave Nilsson hit a two-run homer to lead the visiting Milwaukee Brewers to a 6-2 victory over the Cleveland Indians on Thursday night.

Mercedes (3-2), who lasted just 3-1/3 innings in his last start on June 6, faced the minimum 24 batters through eight innings, with the Brewers turning three double plays.

But Mercedes tired in the ninth, allowing two singles and an RBI double to Marquis Grissom. Doug Jones came on and allowed a sacrifice fly to Omar Vizquel before retiring the side to end the game.

Karl was scratched after experiencing back stiffness.

Red Sox 9, Orioles 5

Boston

Nomar Garciaparra hit two homers, including a three-run shot during a five-run fourth inning, as Boston beat Baltimore.

Mo Vaughn added a two-run homer for the Red Sox, who won for only the fourth time in 13 games and gained a split of the four-game series against the A.L. East-leading Orioles.
